Dead Man Walking
Whether in films, literature or in actual life, I am deeply moved by situations in which the Light emerges undimmed out of the darkness of human existence. Many of my favorite films carry this theme.
What is the most beautiful love you can imagine? Would it not be a love that is most tested — that is steady and true in the face of what seems completely unlovable? Dead Man Walking is on my great movies list because it powerfully depicts such a love. It’s the story of a nun’s (Susan Saranden) relationship to a low life killer rapist on death row (Sean Penn). Sean Penn, a wonderful actor, portrays a soul — so alienated, so encased — who is gradually, gradually touched by mature love.
